The Power of Love

I found a cute picture of Maia (while in China) on the blog of one of our travelmates (Julie, amazing mom to Tess) and I copied it from her. Compare it to our first referral photo, taken only 5 months earlier. It is so amazing to look at these 2 photos together.

This is Maia Isabelle Xuna, December 2006

There's been a lot of talk lately about celebrities adopting "the latest accessory" and CNN inaccurately speculating why Americans adopt from China instead of out of the US foster care system. I won't get into all that. The bottom line is this, all children deserve the love of a family. No one has the right to tell anyone how to form their family. Our daughter was in China. I can't explain why. It's clear to us when we look at her, that she has always been our daughter. When her face lights up and she squeals in delight upon seeing her brothers after school, it's clear they have always been siblings. Just look at the transformation and the sparkle in her eyes.

Dear Tricia, The difference in the pictures is amazing as is the difference in all of your family. We all have a smile that is special when we talk about her and pray in thanksgiving to God for this miracle baby. Ilove you MOM

Tricia, Your words are wise and profound. It's always heartbreaking to hear people make assumptions about adoption; international especially. Many reports treat it more as a shopping expedition than a journey of the heart. A parent does not choose to adopt; adoption chooses them. Our children lived where they lived because that's where God placed them until we could get there. From US foster homes to Liberia, every child has a parent out there waiting to bring them home and a right to be joined with them. I am honored that I was chosen to be one of the many people lucky enough to enlighten others about the blessing of adoption. And it truly is a blessing, isn't it? Just look at Maia thriving. Carry those photos with you as a testiment and a reminder that you were brought together for one purpose. Because Maia's your baby girl! Carolyn
